Ian was born August 2, 1950 to John and Charlotte Bain in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, and moved to Lansing in 1956. While he remained in the US throughout his life, he was a proud Northern Irishman and his heart was forever connected to his homeland.
Early in his career, Ian served as a photographer for the Lansing Labor News, then later applied those skills in the U.S. Army and aerial surveying. For 24 years he worked for General Motors, rising in the ranks until he retired as a supervisor in 2002. Ian cared deeply about the protection of animals and the treatment of underserved communities in the world; always speaking passionately for justice and equality. He loved “the blues” and enjoyed playing the harmonica alongside recordings of his favorite artists. His most cherished memories were of his camping trips with his son, Sean.
Ian is survived by his wife, Connie Bain; his son, Sean (Paige) Bain; step-daughters, Ronda Vermillion, Jackie Cooper, and Gayle (Ryan) Vail; sister, Shirley (Stephen) Purdy; many beloved family members; and his faithful pet dog, Saoirse.
A celebration of Ian’s life will be held at a later date.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared below for the Bain family.
