George Hamilton Foley passed away unexpectedly on January 26, 2018 in Eaton Rapids. Born October 22, 1940 in Superior, Wisconsin to Hamilton and Mildred (Verville) Foley, George graduated from Everett High School in 1958 before attending Michigan State University, where he majored in Political Science and graduated with Honors. He went on to become a Root Tilden Scholar at New York University School of Law, and after graduating in 1965, he was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1966.
In October of 1961, George was cited as a distinguished military student by the MSU Army ROTC, an award given to the upper 10% of students. He entered the service in 1966 at the Army School Center in Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis and served as the Commanding Officer of the 16th Base Post Office at the Presidio of San Francisco, CA. He was promoted from 1st Lieutenant to Captain on February 1, 1966 and was assigned to a tour as Commanding Officer of the 40th Army Postal Unit in Long Binh, South Vietnam. In March 1966, George graduated from the Adjutant General Course Class Number 6, and assumed those duties for the U.S. Adjutant General Corp in Vietnam.
George began his legal career in Lansing in January, 1968 as an associate of Frederick L. Stackable. Before long, George developed a private practice which he continued even in semi-retirement. George specialized in Litigation and handled all kinds of tort law cases. For more than 30 years, he served as the General Counsel for the Health, Welfare, and Pension Fund of the Lansing Sheet Metal Workers Local #7. George could best be described as an outstanding litigator.
He was preceded in death by his parents. George will be lovingly remembered by his children, Athena (Chris) Hooper and Andrew Foley, grandchildren, Lachlan and Grady Hooper; sister, Patricia (Larry) Gee, and nephews, Derek (Ann) Gee, Bryan (Kelly) Gee, and Jeffrey (Karen) Gee.
