Age 83, of Lansing, died on January 15, 2023.
Gary was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan on May 3, 1939, the son of Walter Barrett and Evelyn (Dillon) Ley. He moved to the United States when he was ten years old, became naturalized as a United States citizen, and completed his primary and secondary school education in Owosso.
Gary graduated in 1962 from Michigan State University, where he was an Evans Scholar and a varsity golf team member. He remained an avid and accomplished golfer for the next 60 years and was a member of Lansing Country Club for many years.
Following college, Gary worked as a program analyst for the State of Michigan Department of Transportation in the Bureau of Urban and Public Transportation.
Survivors include his companion Susan Kalter of Ann Arbor; his ex-wife, Mary Barrett of Lansing; his sisters, Joy Lahti and Susan Lahti, both of Calgary, Alberta; his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Martha Barrett of Needham, Massachusetts; his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Greg Ludden of Haslett; and his five grandchildren, Anna Barrett, Halle Horan, Jack Horan, Joseph Barrett, and Talia Barrett.
Gary was predeceased by his sisters, Joan McDowell and Carol Larocque, and his brother, Dick Jacobs.

A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Saturday, February 25 at 12 p.m., officiated by Chaplain Scott Kuepfer, at the Wrought Iron Grill, 317 S. Elm St. #201, Owosso. Friends and family are welcome to stop by, share stories, and grab a good lunch until 4 p.m.
