Bill was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, along with his dear sisters Jeanette (Tom) McComb and Shirley (Richard) Heil. He attended Maplewood Elementary, Walter French Junior High, and Technical High School.
At twenty-one, Bill served in the US Army during the Korean War. After his father's passing, Bill returned to Lansing to care for his mother. There, he met and married Marilyn Myers in 1955, a love that would endure a lifetime. They had three children, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Last year, Bill and Marilyn joyfully celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Their marriage was filled with travel, music, and dancing.
Bill was a dedicated employee and union member at General Motor's Fisher Body plant for 30 years. Bill had many joys in life, including playing the harmonica, woodworking, fishing, winters in Florida, betting on horses, and plotting hijinks. But above all, he cherished time with his family. As a constant supportive presence in the lives of his family members, Bill could always be counted on for a fishing excursion, a game of checkers, or help on a school project. Bill had a one-of-a-kind, joyful, and often mischievous personality that brought so much levity to those around him. Bill was the bedrock of his family and was dearly loved by all who knew him.
In his passing, Bill is now with his parents, sisters, and beloved daughter, Debbie Shumway. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Riddle; children, Michael Riddle and Melinda (Michael) Conway; grandchildren, Jennifer (Michael) Couchman, Michelle (Roberto) Renteria, Kaitlyn Riddle, Victoria Baker (Josef Welbes), and Alaina Baker (Lane Proctor); great-grandchildren, Hezekiah Couchman, Ephraim Couchman, Natalia Renteria, Ezra Couchman, and Xavier Renteria, and loved ones including Deborah Riddle (Shaffer) and many nieces, and nephews.
The Celebration of Life service for Bill will be held at 2:30 pm Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Gorsline- Runciman Tiffany Chapel, 3232 W Saginaw Street, Lansing, MI 48917. We warmly invite anyone who knew and loved him to join us in celebrating his life. Following the service, there will be a gathering with food, providing an opportunity to share memories and celebrate a man well-loved and a life well-lived.
