Margaret “Nanny” Henderson passed away peacefully on the sunny evening of July 19 at the age of 96. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Rev. Murray Henderson who she has dearly missed; her son Rob, son in law Max, daughter in law Molly; sisters Edith, Norma and their husbands.
Nanny is lovingly remembered by her many extended family members, friends and children: Kathy, Graham (Estelita), Stephen, Glenys (Bill) and grandchildren: Matthew (Meredith), Christina (Terence), Kaitlyn (Deryk), Lindsay (Colton), Cathy (Fab) and great grandchildren: Jayden, Kaelan, Ciara; Miguel, Deklan; Karter; Alec; Sophia and Marcus.
Mom was born on February 28, 1924, a leap year, in Victoria. She was raised in Prince Rupert with her two sisters. When she graduated high school, she went to work for the Royal Bank. It is through friendship at the bank that she met Dad who at the time was working at a furniture store.
They were married in 1947 and their life and adventures continued in various places including: Winnipeg, Banswara, India (where they resided as missionaries) and various communities in B.C.
As her children were growing, Mom decided to enter university to earn her teaching degree. She graduated from the University of Victoria and became a career substitute teacher in the Greater Victoria area and North Vancouver where she retired from teaching.
Mom had great faith in the Lord. As a wife of a United Church minister, she was very involved in the church community: teaching Sunday School, leading the junior choir, CGIT Leader and the UCW where she made many friends.
After Dad’s passing Mom continued to be involved in the United Church. She was often asked to read scripture or lead worship and she jokingly said her sign should be “have sermon will travel”.
Nanny, as she was known to everyone loved her family and spending time with them. She was very involved in the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was very proud of them and loved the times she could visit and give them hugs.
At the age of 85, she gave up driving and moved to Bethshan in Cloverdale where she lived independently and was closer to her family. You could find her each afternoon in the Bistro ensuring the coffee and tea were ready and that everyone was served. She truly enjoyed her time there.
Due to failing health, Mom had spent the past 4 years at Langley Lodge. We thank the 5th floor staff for taking care of Mom and for being her family these past 5 months.
A private graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cloverdale United Church (Mission and Service Fund), BC Heart and Stroke Foundation or BC Epilepsy Society. As Nanny always said “a love and a hug to you”. Love you forever Mom/Nanny.
