He was born on December 19, 1923, in Lancaster, Ohio and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1942. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in music from Northwestern University, Illinois. Bill was a man of many adventures throughout his life from driving a bus in Chicago to radio broadcasting and advertising sales at WLW Cinncinati. Bill would fulfill his legacy, alongside his brother Dick George with the development of Valley View Golf and Swim Club, established in 1956. Bill directed the choir at Grace United Church of Christ for nearly 30 years. He sang as a soloist at many weddings. William R George (aka Bill and Curley in younger days) was a member of the board on the USGA and travelled to every USGA tournament as a volunteer when he was able and as a bystander until the age of 80. He was an original member and President for the Ohio Golf Course Owners Association. His passion for giving back was reflected in his work with Maywood Mission of Lancaster, Ohio, amongst many other charities. An avid supporter of The Ohio University Music Program, Northwestern Music Scholarship program, and Lancaster High School Music. This trend surely began when he was building the golf course and invited Gary Campbell as a young high school student to live with the family. He and Maribell supported exchange students during their lifetime. The first being Cristy Serrano from Columbia, whose family is like our familly. He touched thousands of lives with a giving heart and a generous pocket.
He was a proud member of the Kiwanis Club organization for many years having been president of that organization in 1969.
William (Bill) is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maribell (Trout) George; two sons, Cory (Barbi) George and Ty (Patty) George of Lancaster; and daughter, Kary (George) VanMeter of Logan; grandchildren, Bleu George of Lancaster, Cory Bell of Newark, Kali Sheumaker of Lancaster, Ohio and many great grandchildren, a brother Curtis (Marilyn) George, nieces and nephews.
