Alan August Alten, 68, of Canal Winchester, passed away peacefully December 7, 2021, at the Pickering House, surrounded by his family following a courageous three year battle with cancer. He was born September 15, 1953, to Robert and Mary Alten of Lancaster, Ohio. He earned the rank of Sgt. in the United States Air Force as a jet mechanic. Following his military service he worked for Battelle Memorial Institute for 30 years as a Senior Mechanical Engineer where he developed several patents in his name. He later worked at Rimrock Robotics, Columbus, Ohio. He and his wife formerly owned and operated ABJ Toys and Hobbies in Pickerington and Famous Uncle Al’s Hot Dogs and Grille in Lancaster. He enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren, fishing at Rice Lake in Canada, assembling airplane models and attending car shows in his 1934 Ford Coupe he fondly named Elwood.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Beth A. Alten, daughter Jenna (Jay) Solenbarger, twin grandchildren Tyler and Bella and grandson Derek; sister, Autumn (Chris) Ream, brothers, Mark Alten and Ronald (Sandy) Alten, many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Also surviving is his father-in-law Duke Ellis, Winterpark, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Vicki Alten.
Services will be held at Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home, 436 N. Broad St., Lancaster, Ohio on Monday December 13th. Rev. Mark Raddatz officiating. Calling hours are from 10 to 11 a.m., service following at 11:00. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, 351 Coonpath Rd, NE, Lancaster, Ohio, where the Veterans Burial Detail will provide military honors.
