Lloyd Stanley Gill Sr. died on October 19, 2020 at Palmdale Regional Medical Center in Palmdale, California. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 Bladder Cancer on June 11, 2020. He fought as long as he could until the disease overtook his body.
Lloyd was born on March 1, 1951 in Belize City, Belize to Evelyn Lahoodie-Garnett and George Branson Gill(deceased). He was raised by his Godmother, Octavia Gonzales(deceased) and grew up with her granddaughters, Therese Flowers(deceased) and Patricia Flowers-Avilez who treated and loved him like a brother. Lloyd attended Holy Redeemer School in Belize City. He was also an altar server for Holy Redeemer Church. He attended secondary school for a short time. He held jobs at the Belize Times Newspaper and the Belize Airport before emigrating to the United States.
Lloyd arrived in the United States and resided with his sister, Ann Gill-Bennett and her family in Keyport, New Jersey. He was employed by Anchor Glass Corporation in Cliffwood, New Jersey for about 15 years. He married Jacalyn Alexander-Gill(deceased) and they had two children, Michelle Gill and Lloyd Gill. Lloyd also had a daughter, Ashley Carter.
Lloyd moved to Brooklyn, New York where he met and married Marilyn Dawson-Gill(deceased). Lloyd helped Marilyn raise her son, Dejon Brackett who had the utmost respect for him.
Lloyd relocated to Los Angeles, California in 2003. About a year after arriving in Los Angeles, he was hired by UCLA as a custodian. He was promoted to Senior Custodian a few years later and continued working at UCLA until he became ill. He worked for 16 years with that institution and was planning to retire at the end of this year.
Lloyd was married to Phyllis Bennett-Gill in California in 2004. He helped raised her children, Michael, Kimberly, Ryan, Stephanie, Sherrylynn and Joseph Gill and was very fond of her grandkids.
Lloyd spent most of his free time watching sports, especially football. His favorite teams were the NY Giants and the Dallas Cowboys. He would call his nephew, Claude, Jr. in New Jersey to talk crazy stuff about his team, the Pittsburgh Steelers just to annoy him. He always reminded his mother to watch the baseball games, especially the Yankees. He watched the games with her whenever he visited. He also enjoyed reading a good book.
Lloyd was a beautiful soul, always calm, cool and collective. Some called him “gentle giant” or “the quiet one.” He was respected and loved by all who knew him. He always had a big old smile for everyone. Lloyd loved to gather with his siblings and cousins for birthday parties and other family events. He loved to dance and always dressed so sharply.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gill, his son, Lloyd Gill, Jr., two daughters, Michelle Gill and Ashley Carter and his mother, Evelyn Garnett. He is also survived by his siblings, Ann Bennett(Claude), New Jersey, Joslyn Gill(Juanita), Belize, Lorris Grant, California, Elvis Garnett(Alice), California, Lawrence Garnett (Cheryl), Florida, Brenda Garnett, California, Maureen Garnett, Florida, Lavern Garnett, California, Denise Garnett, California, George Gill and Michael Gill, Belize and one stepson, Dejon Brackett, New York, six grandchildren, Ramel Pearson-Gill, Elijah Gill, Satira Gill, Janiyah Gill, Isaiah Gill and Jenna Revels, one great grandson, Adonis Gill, two surviving aunts, Pearl Avilez, Florida and Gertrude Humes, Belize and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will surely be missed.
