Sara Jane Schlesinger

Sara was born July 21, 1941 in New Brunswick, NJ, but grew up in Highland Park. She attended Highland Park High School. Sara worked for many years as an administrative assistant at Rutgers University Medical School Department of Family Medicine until her retirement in 2005.

Born with a love of the beach, Sara spent her childhood summers at Camp Osborn on the Jersey shore. As an adult, the beach became a backdrop for family, friends, and a lifetime of great memories.

Sara had a passion for knitting and needlepoint. She spent countless hours creating blankets, hats, and sweaters. Some creations helped to raise money for charity while some were to bring a little joy to a friend or relative.

Sara was a longtime skilled Mah Jong player who brought many new players into the fold. Mah Jong wasn’t just a game, but a cherished tradition shared with dear friends and family. Atlantic City was often on her mind whether for a nice dinner, a stroll on the boardwalk or a few hours at a poker machine.

Family was at the heart of many things she enjoyed, whether cooking the Sephardic specialties of her grandmother, knitting a baby blanket for a friends new grandchild or just sitting on the beach enjoying the day with family. Sara’s love of family was at her very core.

Sara leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and precious memories. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.

Sara was pre-deceased by the love of her life, her husband Joe who passed in 2012. She is survived by her brother Ted and his wife Marcia, by her son, Scott and his wife Maria, her son, Stuart and his wife Jeannie. She is also survived by her niece, Robin and her husband Bob, and her niece, Geri and her husband, John, and all her favorite grand-niece and nephews, Gracie, Jack, Ben and Will.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday April 19 at 11:00 a.m. in the D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave., Lakewood, N.J. 08701. Sara will be interred at the Beth Israel Memorial Park in Woodbridge, N.J.
