Richard was born and raised in Plainfield, NJ. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in History from Wake Forest University where he spent his “happiest times” in the Theta Chi fraternity. He was a great supporter of the Wake Forest football and basketball teams. After college, he served in the U.S. Army and worked for the Social Security Administration. In 1966, he married the love of his life, Helen. They raised their family in Closter before retiring down to the Fairways in Lakewood in 2001. Richard was an avid stamp collector, gardener and Yankees and NY Giants fan. He belonged to the American Legion and several clubs at the Fairways, including the Men’s Club, the Amici Club and the Shamrock Club. He loved going on cruises and relaxing on the beach.
Richard was predeceased by his brother, Oakley. Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Helen, and two children, Christine Kormanik and her husband Glen of CA and John of PA. He will be dearly missed by his two grandchildren, James and Jessica.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 30 from 11:00am-1:00pm, with a service beginning at 1:00pm, at D’Elia Funeral Home, Lakewood. Entombment will follow at St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Lakewood.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard's name to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
