Lorraine L. Franklin-a strong, intelligent, caring woman was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her husband John predeceased her on January 12, 2021. They were married for 67 years and she missed his love and companionship. She was born December 18, 1930 in Garfield, New Jersey.
Lorraine was the first member of her family to go to college and wanted to study accounting. She was advised that accounting was not a good career for a woman so she studied to become a business teacher and graduated from Rider College in 1952. Lorraine began her teaching career in Wildwood, N.J. but in 1954 moved to Lakewood where she taught at the high school for 33 1/2 years. She taught business courses such as accounting and typing, which later became keyboarding. Lorraine enjoyed working with students and served as the Junior class advisor. The highlight of the year would be the Junior Prom which was held in the school gym which was transformed by the students with creative decorations to match the theme of the evening. Lorraine cared about her students and connected with them and respected them. She had a lasting impact on her students and many of them wrote her notes to let her know how she affected their lives. Many students let her know that she was like a second mother to them. Lorraine retired from Lakewood High School in 1994.
Lorraine owned the Laketon Inn with her son Jay. She enjoyed keeping the books, doing the payroll and overseeing the employees and worked there until the business was sold in 2019.
Lorraine had artistic abilities that she channeled through painting ceramics, doing needlepoint and knitting. She always had a twinkle in her eye and a big welcoming smile on her face. She took joy in connecting with people wherever she went. She was a lively, classy lady who learned to play the balalaika and piano and loved to polka.
Lorraine (Moroz) married John J. Franklin on July 18, 1953 and they built a wonderful life together. They had four children-Kathy, Jay, Jim and Doug (passed away in 1987 from a car accident). Kathy and her husband Stephen Smith live in Chantilly, Virginia and have four children-Brian (and Leah), Kyle, Andrew (and Felicia), Stephanie (and Evan). Jay has two children-Taylor and Jaelyn (passed in 2015). Jim has two children-Jimmy and Victoria. Lorraine’s great grandchildren are Kathy, Meredith, Caitlynn, Gardner and Cameron Smith and Victor and Vanessa Fayard. Two more great grandchildren will be born later this year. Lorraine loved her dog Blue and enjoyed spoiling him.
Lorraine passed away on May 14, 2021 with her three children at her side.
Lorraine’s family and those who knew her keep her in their hearts and have many fond memories of her keen interest in them and the way her face would light up with a smile when she saw them.
