John Patrick Daly was born on January 28, 1955 to Maureen and Pat Daly. Johnny was the first grandchild on his Father’s side of the family. His Nanny, Ann and his Gramps, John were over the moon with their blond haired blue-eyed grandson. Just as happy were his grandparents on his Mom’s side, Marion and Pete Darcy.
As often as they could Nanny and Gramps would have Johnny spend the weekend with them. On one occasion, Johnny was worried that his guardian angel would not know where he was so he kept saying out the car window, “Angel, I in the country.” Johnny was born in Brooklyn so New Jersey was the country to him. Johnny loved his grandparent’s house in Bayville. He often reminisced about family times spent there.
Johnny was an animal lover from a young age. One cold winter day his Mom went into the bathroom and swimming in the tub were 4 white ducks. The ducks had frozen to the ice in the lagoon and Johnny had rescued them and brought them inside to warm up. Johnny had many dogs in his lifetime. All of the dogs were special in their own way but none of them could outshine Johnny’s dog, Spunky. Spunky grew up with Johnny and lived to be 18 years old.
Johnny had two brothers, Paul and Glen. Johnny was 9 when Paul was born and 16 when Glen was born. The age difference kept the brothers from having much in common but as they got older they grew to appreciate one another.
Johnny had an especially close bond with his mother, Maureen. One of his proudest days was when he was 17 and saved money from after school jobs and bought his Mom a dishwasher. Maureen loved telling everyone that Johnny bought the dishwasher for her.
Johnny was a very loyal friend. Johnny met 2 boys in grade school, Gregory and William and kept the friendships his whole life. He never forgot anyone that was kind to him.
After Johnny graduated high school he went on a trip he had been planning a long time. He went across the US on his Honda 750 motorcycle. Johnny would often tell his sons about the trip and the wonderful memories.
Johnny work at Bell Labs which became AT&T for nearly 40 years. Many of those years he won “The Perfect Attendance” award. He would go years without missing a day at work.
Johnny was very proud of his home. A log cabin that he built with the help of family and friends.
In the 1980’s Johnny was married and became an instant Father to his stepson, Michael. To Johnny’s delight two more sons, Christopher and Patrick joined the family. Patrick said his Dad tried to instill values in his sons. Values like respect for people, when you do a job do it to the best of your ability - don’t cut corners and don’t make excuses. If you make a mistake admit it and then go and do better. Johnny loved taking his boys to Blackbeards, an amusement park in Bayville and to dinner at Pete & Elda’s in Neptune.
Johnny loved being with his granddaughters, Ella and Kyleigh. He especially liked to give them sweets and watch their delight. Johnny liked to take the girls to the waterpark in Jackson and watch them have a great time.
About 5 years ago Johnny retired from his job. Toward the end of his life Johnny enjoyed shopping in dollar stores, reminiscing about when he was young, being with his sons and granddaughters and just relaxing in his home with his beloved dog, Snow. Johnny passed away on Monday, September 19th 2022.
