Ernestine was born October 15, 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas to Ernest and Effie (Freeman) Bryant. Two sisters Earlyne, Ester Mae, one brother Eugene proceeded her in death. She graduated from Kansas City's Somner High School. She worked at Kresge's 5 and 10¢. In 1954 Ernestine married John Simpson and they moved to Denver. John was 2nd generation out of slavery. He was 25 years older than his wife. Both lived through the KKK days and the Jim Crow era. Three sons, Ronnie, twins Dwayne and Wayne blessed their marriage. Her married life was devoted to caring for and raising family in the home John purchased for them.
A long suffering soul, always a smile and a laugh exuded her cheerful acceptance and endurance in carrying the heavy burdens on 98 1/2 years. Strong of will and a knowingly determined soul, she bore the weight of "color" in silence.
John was baptized August 31, 1994. Father Gregory Draham CMRI baptized Ernestine July 8, 2020.
A visitation for Ernestine will start at 9:00am followed by a rosary and funeral mass on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church, 4101 North Lamar Street, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
