Betty Jean Parsons Kern, 95, died in Boulder, Colorado, on Monday, March 4, 2024. She was lovingly cared for by her nephew Doug Christman of Boulder, Colorado, with whom she shared a close relationship. Other nephews and nieces survive her.
Betty, the daughter of Elihu and Lorena Parsons, was born December 7, 1928, in Lyons, Colorado. She was the middle of her mother's five children: Ralph Edward Godsey, Helen Elizabeth Godsey, Donna Parsons, and Richard Elery McCarty. She grew up in Lyons, Sugarloaf, and Lafayette.
Betty was married to Marks Coy Kern on August 10, 1954, until his passing in 1971. The couple managed Red Rock Court Cottages at the mouth of Boulder Canyon, where they were known for their hospitality. Before moving to Boulder, the couple lived in San Luis Valley, Colorado, where Marks worked as a stone mason.
In the late 1970s, Betty met her second soulmate, Roy Hendricks, who died in 2008. During the couple's nearly 30 years together, they raised a few cattle, took many road trips across the United States, and loved eating out. Until her last week, she enjoyed the company of Roy's son, Ron Hendricks, and daughter-in-law, Sheree Josephson, who fostered a close relationship with her.
Before residing at Brookdale North and then Brookdale Boulder Creek assisted living, Betty made her home on the corner of Jay Road and the Diagonal. There, she found immense joy in caring for her beloved dogs, a testament to her nurturing nature. She would often take walks across the road in the Boulder Open Space, a routine that brought her peace. Betty had a fondness for birds, particularly cardinals. She was a dedicated and eternally hopeful fan of the Broncos and Rockies. Betty cherished her interactions with friends and relatives, over the phone and in person, and always had a sweet treat ready for her visitors. She often started her day by reading or listening to Bible verses.
Betty would appreciate donations to your local Humane Society.
