Geoffrey Randolph Douglas was born in Austin, Texas and was raised in both Austin and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His love of airplanes began at an early age. He obtained his pilot’s license at the age of 15, even before he could drive a car!
He graduated from Anderson High School in Austin and attended college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where his father was an Economics professor. Geoffrey graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Economics in 1983. He attended Officers Candidate School then Pilot Training at Reese AFB in Lubbock, Texas.
His first USAF assignment was at the 89th Squadron at Andrews AFB in Maryland where he flew dignitaries around the USA. It was in Maryland where he met and married the former Colleen Foley in 1991. He was then stationed at Dover AFB from 1991-1994 where he flew the C-5 Galaxy throughout the Gulf War and was awarded a number of medals and ribbons for his exemplary service during this period.
His next assignment was as an instructor pilot at Reese AFB, Lubbock, Texas, from 1994-1997. In 1997 Geoff moved to San Antonio, Texas to fly at Randolph AFB, where his daughter Katherine Elizabeth was born in 1998. While in the USAF Reserves, Geoff was hired by Continental (now United) Airlines in 1999 and flew the Boeing 767 and 777 all over the world, from Newark to London to Tokyo.
Lt. Col. Douglas finished off his military career in the USAF Reserves in 2012 with a position at Scott AFB in Illinois. In 2017 Geoffrey married Julia Manuel in Austin. He was always a brave and honorable fighter, even until the end as he battled lymphoma during the two years leading up to his death.
He is survived by his loving wife Julia, daughter Katherine, mother Barbara, sister Barbie, and a large extended family.
