David was born in Mercedes, Texas, on October 14, 1939 to Jessie and Walter Anderson. He and his older brother Jerry were raised in Weslaco, Texas among groves of citrus trees. As the son of a farmer and rancher, David grew up hunting deer, dove and quail, and their life on the family’s property in the Texas Valley provided many fond memories and countless stories.
David graduated from Texas A&M University in 1961 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. Throughout his life, he was a proud and loyal Aggie and maintained many lifelong friendships from his time at A&M. When David was just eleven, he shot off his right thumb on a quail hunt when his shotgun slipped through his hand. Unbeknownst to David, this injury would ultimately make him ineligible to receive a commission to the military, but he served as a proud member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University all the same and later joined the Ross Volunteers Honor Guard.
David’s first job out of college was with E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, and he would go on to enjoy a 34 year career with the company. His time at DuPont introduced him to many great friends and led him to Amarillo, Little Rock, San Antonio, Houston, and Jacksonville.
It was in Amarillo where David met the love of his life, Sue Ann Washburn. David and Sue Ann were married in Dallas in 1964. (The two spent their 58th wedding anniversary together on November 28, the day before David passed.) Those who knew them could see how much David adored and admired Sue Ann – they were absolutely the best of friends. A few years after they were married, the couple welcomed their first child, Eric, and later, Mark. David’s sons were his pride and joy and he was a devoted, hands-on Dad who always put his family first. He was extremely active in coaching his boys in their various sports and introduced them to some of his favorite hobbies, like hunting and golf.
Upon retirement in 1995, David and Sue Ann moved to Lakeway, Texas. Throughout their retirement, the couple enjoyed cruising and traveling with good friends to places near and far. Closer to home though, the couple took up boating and created lasting memories on Lake Travis with a growing family and good friends. God blessed David and Sue Ann with two beautiful daughters-in-laws and later five remarkable grandchildren who all know David affectionately as Pop.
David will be remembered for his positive outlook on most everything. He possessed a great sense of humor and loved telling a funny joke, sharing a good story, or sending out amusing and informative emails. He always looked forward to his Wednesday mornings with the Men’s Breakfast Club and Sunday mornings at Lakeway Church. David had a sincere thirst to expand his knowledge of God’s Word and ways – he sought to deepen his Christian faith and understanding through the Rooted Series and through fellowship with those in his Seekers Bible Study.
When David was diagnosed with cancer, it was his faith that sustained him, and his family and friends who ministered to him. David never lost his calm, good-natured temperament, despite the pain and trials he endured. And when the end came, David was ready to move on and meet his Maker with absolute peace in knowing where he was going. He made it clear to Sue Ann that he would be waiting for her when she arrived.
David is survived by his wife, Sue Ann; son Eric and his wife Kelley; son Mark and his wife Julie; his grandchildren; Luke (22), John Austin (21) and Wells (18), Ellie (21) and Katie (18) Anderson and, his brother, Jerry Anderson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Walter Anderson.
A memorial service for David will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, December 27, in the Chapel of Lakeway Church, 2203 Lakeway Blvd, Lakeway, TX 78734. Following the service, guests are invited to greet the family at a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lakeway Church in David’s name.
