Michael Lawrence Collister, 52, of Loxahatchee, FL, passed away at home on January 10, 2012, after a courageous fight with cancer. Mike was born in Miami on October 24, 1959, and grew up in Broward County. He was hired by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office in 1983. During his 28 year career, Mike served in a number of specialty units including Canine, Tactical, Narcotics and the Marine unit. One of his proudest achievements was being on the SWAT team where he served as a member of the entry team, team armorer, and firearms instructor. Mike was a gentleman of quiet competence and exceptional character whose professionalism and leadership was felt by all, and recognized by his being presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by his SWAT brothers. He was awarded the Combat Cross for fatally wounding an armed assailant, as well as receiving several Life Saving Awards for rescuing persons in danger without regard for his own safety. Mike always put others first and he demonstrated this, and his warrior spirit, every day of his life.
Mike loved Harley Davidson Motorcycles, the Miami Dolphins, guns, and his wife Bettee; although, not necessarily in that order. He is survived by Bettee; daughters Kristan Collister and Nicole Collister; grandchildren, Briana, Meadow and Payton Wobschall; mother, Betty June Collister; sisters, Kathleen Collister, Beth Gionette, Diane Collister, Laurie Collister, Becky Schrader, Allison Libertucci, and Kimberly Finn; and brother Scott Pender. Also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, Mike valued a special relationship with his nephew Ryan Pender. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas Collister, and brother, Timothy Collister. Mike had many friends and brothers, who along with his family, will cherish his memory and miss him forever.
A memorial service will be held, Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Christ Fellowship Church, south campus, on Northlake Blvd. at 10:30AM, followed by a wake hosted by the PBA at their hall, 2100 Florida Mango Rd., West Palm Beach.
