Mike cherished his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He loved hunting, fishing, and living the lake life. Mike enjoyed watching Nascar and working on projects in the garage. Mike made everyone feel welcome and put a smile on their faces by telling them a joke or story. He raised his family in Grand Ledge working as a Tool and Die Maker for General Motors. After retirement, he moved up to the family cottage on Crooked Lake in Lake, MI. Mike spent several winters as a snowbird in Arcadia, FL, and most recently lived in Lake Odessa, MI on Jordan Lake.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Bonnie Simmons, his parents, father & mother-in-law Eldon and Irene Decker, brother-in-law's Wally Gardner, Eldon (Budd) Decker II and Gordon Walter, sister-in-law Diane Decker, and nephews Mark Simmons and Eldon (Lance) Decker. Surviving are his two children Michael (Michelle) Simmons, and Lisa (Jeffrey) Maag, his grandchildren Tiffani (fiancé-Derek Cotton) Simmons, Hailey (fiancé-Derek Morris) Simmons, Ashley (Travis Fahey) Maag, and Jonathan Maag, his great grandson Brantley Cotton, brothers Robert (Martha) Simmons and Floyd (Bonnie) Simmons, sisters Debbie (James) Bengel, Sandy Walter, and Pam Gardner, and sister-in-law Barbara (James) Powell. He also leaves behind several cousins and many nieces and nephews.
Mike's wishes were for his children to host a pig roast party to celebrate his life. He did not want a funeral or people to mourn his passing. He is at peace now and has been reunited with his beautiful wife and best friend Bonnie. Upon his wishes, a Memorial Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 7th from 1-5 p.m. @ the Country Creek Reception Hall (5859 N Michigan Rd. in Dimondale, MI).
Mike and Bonnie had a special love for all dogs. They adopted many throughout the years. Roo and Tucker gave Mike companionship throughout his remaining days. If desired, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Ionia County Animal Shelter.
