Lyle Herbert Sandbrook, Sr. passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024. He was born in Woodland, MI on June 13, 1929 to Harry and Gladys (Rodgers) Sandbrook. He was raised in Woodland and graduated from Woodland school. He was in the Air Force from 1950-1953 during the Korean Conflict and spent his years in England. During that time he began communicating with Jean Thomas, of Pennsylvania. He learned about Jean through his bunkmate. They corresponded for quite some time until Lyle asked Jean to come to England to get married. She told her parents she was staying with a girlfriend for the weekend and off to England she went. Two weeks later, they were married. They had 57 wonderful years together until her passing on February 14, 2011. Lyle worked at the Woodland Elevator, owned Sandy’s Standard in Woodland, and worked at Williams Department Store laying carpet and linoleum before going to work with Ken McCurdy of Ken’s Home Service. When Ken retired, Lyle took over, completed schooling to become a Master Plumber and renamed the business Sandy’s Plumbing and Electrical. He kept very busy working during the day and farming in the evenings. He slowed down his work schedule as he got older, but still did a job here and there until just a few years ago. Lyle was a member of the Woodland Pony Club, a member of The Woodland Softball team, served on the Woodland Township Fire Department for 24 years, the Woodland Township Board of Review for 23 years, and 12 years on the Lakewood Board of Education. He enjoyed golfing for many years, collecting hats and golf balls, watching his grandkids play sports, and maintaining a meticulously mowed lawn.
He was a friend to everyone that knew him. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Jean, and his brother, Norman. He is survived by his son Lyle, Jr. (Martha Yoder), daughter Terri Decker (Jim), granddaughter Becki Deater (Jeff) and their children, Brody, Bellamie, Beckett, and Brielle. Grandson Jarrod Stahl and his children Cami and Colton. His sisters Janice Dixon of Nashville, Donna Wilcox of Hastings, many nieces and nephews, and special friend, Joyce Classic. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Friday, March 22, 2024 at Kilpatrick Church, 10005 E. Barnum Road, Woodland, MI from 5pm-8pm. Memorial service on Saturday, March 23, 2024 also at Kilpatrick Church at 11:00am.
