Lloyd O. Corston

Lloyd O. Corston Lake Odessa - Lloyd Orlo Corston, 89, of Lake Odessa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 25, 2019 at Hastings Rehabilitation after a long battle with vascular dementia. Lloyd was born on October 11, 1930 to Lloyd Clarence “Bud” and Annie Maude Elizabeth “Nancy” (Dowling) Corston in Saint Clair Shores, MI. He graduated from Lakeshore High School in 1950 and enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving as a crewman on the U.S.S. Siboney during the Korean War.

At a very early age, Lloyd found his passion for all things mechanical, and was often called a ‘jack of all trades’ for his natural talent for trouble shooting engines and machinery. He loved cars and boats, and he owned numerous of both throughout his lifetime. His ’65 Ford Thunderbird convertible and his 30-foot twin engine Bayliner cabin cruiser were amongst the latest of his favorite fleet.

Lloyd found purpose in working on projects, be they mechanical or construction. Some of his proudest moments were building boats, constructing houses and sewing canvas boat liners, curtains and pillows.

Lloyd also had an adventurous spirit when it came to his career. After serving in the Navy, he worked as a photo-engraver at Brophy’s in Detroit. He and Beverly later purchased the Lake Odessa Wave newspaper in 1971, moving their family from Mt. Clemens to relocate to an old farm house on Musgrove Hwy. The newspaper business was a family affair, with each of their children lending a hand in their own capacity. They later sold the newspaper in 1978 and Lloyd worked as a lithographer at Hasting Press and Avon Printing in Rochester, MI.

Lloyd is most affectionately remembered for his soft spoken, philosophical wisdoms, his healing fatherly hugs, his fondness for big band crooners with which he often broke out in unison, and his insistence on the importance of respect and humility. He often coined the phrases “weigh your words” and “everything in moderation” which will forever ring in the ears of his children. Lloyd and Beverly had a playful, loving relationship earning them family nicknames “Pete and Tilly”.

Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Beverly (Bridgewater) Corston, his children: Kerry (Kendall) Wilcox, Lloyd Everett (Linda) Corston, Mark Corston, Kimberly (David) Duffield, Kami Brown; his 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and sister Patty Taylor. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Clarence and Annie Corston, his brother Arthur Corston, his sisters in law Ivolou Corston and Patricia Bitney, brothers in law Gary Taylor and John W. Bridgewater, his daughter in law Mary Lou Corston, and his great-granddaughter Kyra Winslow.

A brief visitation will precede the scheduled visitation with family and friends from 2pm until 5pm on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa, MI. Funeral services and a celebration of Lloyd’s life will be held 11am on Monday, December 2, 2019 at the Central United Methodist Church in Lake Odessa, MI. A graveside service will take place in the Lakeside Cemetery-Lake Odessa. Memorials may be made to the Central United Methodist Church of Lake Odessa.
