Susan (Susie) was born on July 27, 1955 in Opelousas, La. After graduating from A.M. Barbe High School in 1973, she struck out on her own living first in Texas and then in Arizona for many years. She eventually returned to Lake Charles to be closer to family.
She was preceded in death by her only child, Michael Kelly Shields; her mother, Betty Warren Bernard; her brother, Michael Warren Bernard; and former husband, James Robert Scott.
She is survived by her loving husband, Michael Manena; her sisters, Alice Letlow of Arcadia, La., Betty Sarver of Lake Charles, La., Rosie Warner of Longville, La., Ann Wilds of Conroe, Tx., and Sophary Frazer of Aiken, SC and sister-in-law, Pam Manena; along with numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.
Susie was known as a vibrant, fun-loving, and welcoming friend and hostess who loved people fiercely. She loved to garden, cook and entertain. She was also a fierce survivor having been an organ donor recipient for over twenty years. She and her husband attended the Vineyard Church of Lake Charles, and it gives the family much peace to know that she is restored to full health with Jesus. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, September 18, at Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Visitation will begin at 12:30 pm and a service will be held at 1 pm with Pastor George Rodrequez officiating. Cremation has been entrusted to Hixson Funeral Home.
