She was born and spent the greater part of her life in Lake Charles. A graduate of LaGrange High School, she worked as a Secretary at area churches, businesses, and the McNeese Baptist Student Union, where she was a mentor to many McNeese students. She was a member of Sale Street Baptist Church where she volunteered as church librarian. Her passions included flower gardening and genealogy.
Betty is preceded in death by her father, Benjamin Earl Ellender; her mother, May Farque Ellender; and her husband, Edwin Joseph Gauthreaux.
Those left to carry on her memory are her four children: Pam Judice (Gary), Maellyn Fortenberry, Dale Gauthreaux, and Rhonda Godbold; her sister, Carole Miller, and brother, David Ellender (Nancy Phillips). She held one of the greatest honors of being called “Granny” to nine grandchildren; Michelle Judice, Kimberly Fontenot, Bryan Judice (Charla), Joe Fortenberry (Kensey), Rebecca Thomas (Jay), Mikaela Gauthreaux, Nathan Gauthreaux, Garrett Gauthreaux and Cameron Godbold and five great grandchildren; Aiden Fortenberry, Grayson Fortenberry, Hudson Fortenberry, Grady Thomas and Rylan Mae Thomas.
Services will be administered at Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles at 11:00 am on Monday, September 26, 2022. The family will welcome visitors on Sunday, September 25, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Monday, September 26, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the services. Graveside Services will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Lake Charles.
The family ask that everyone in attendance wear blue to honor Betty as this was her favorite color.
