John Allan Scott, 77, of Tucson, AZ passed away Monday, May 31, in LaGrange, GA, after a sudden illness. A family memorial will be held in LaGrange. A celebration of his life will be held in Cedar Rapids in July 2010.
John was born March 25, 1933 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of the late Norman B. and Martha A. (Gearkee) Scott. He was a graduate of Iowa State Teacher’s College (UNI) and received his MA from the University of Iowa. John taught for over 22 years with the Cedar Rapids school system, first at Franklin Jr. High and at Harding Jr. High when it opened. He also worked for the Norman Scott Company, in later years retiring as CEO. John was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids until retiring to Tucson, AZ and joining Holy Way Presbyterian, serving in various ministries and as elder for both congregations. He was also very involved with Civil War Round Table and genealogy research. He spent much of his later years traveling and enjoying historical sites, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorie (Dauenbaugh) Scott of Tucson, AZ; daughters Kathy (Craig) Hanway and Kristy (Smokey) McKinney, and a son Ken (Debbie) Scott; grandchildren Jeff & Nick Hanway, Megan (McKinney) & Seth Todd, Lindsay (McKinney) & Nick Sayre, Taylor McKinney, Mike (Julie) Scott , Laura & Emily Scott. Survivors also include John’s sisters, Jane Messerall and Shirley (Jeff) Brown of LaGrange, GA, and many nieces and nephews.
