She was born December 19, 1927 in Mitchell County GA to the late Guy Gee Whitcomb and Mary Kennedy Whitcomb.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis J. Abernathy; sister, Caroline Hunter and brother, Carroll Whitcomb.
She is survived by her son, Randy (Megan) Abernathy of Biloxi, MS; sister, Harriette Piper of Stafford, KS along with several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Catherine, graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. degree in Education and went on the graduate from the University of Auburn with a MA degree and Specialist degree in Education. She worked a total of thirty years in the Troup County School System and LaGrange City School System as a teacher, librarian, instructional supervisor and Coordinator of Federal Programs.
Catherine was a faithful member of First Baptist Church on the Square where she, her husband, Otis enjoyed teaching and being part of Sunday School.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M Saturday, January 13, 2024 in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in LaGrange, GA. The Gathering of Family and Friends will take place prior to the service from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. prior to the service on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to West Georgia Hospice in her honor.
