Mr. Spinks was born November 23, 1920 in LaGrange, GA, son of the late John Roy Spinks, Sr. and Mary Johnson Spinks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sisters.
Mr. Spinks, affectionately called "Grandpa", was known for his witty sense of humor and loving, kind nature. He was a lifelong resident of LaGrange, GA and a member of the “greatest generation.” An avid historian, his commitment to God and to family was revered by all. During World War II, he served in the US Army Signal Corps on the Pacific Island of Guam.
For 78 years, Mr. Spinks was a member of First Baptist Church on the Square. His service there included roles as a deacon and as a Sunday School teacher to the Williams/Pilots Sunday School Class. Mr. Spinks’ involvement in the LaGrange community included serving as president of the LaGrange Kiwanis Club. He was a 60-year member of the Union Masonic Lodge No. 28 and enjoyed working with young people through the Junior Achievement Program. Mr. Spinks was a founder of Spinks Agency and continued to be a cornerstone of the current Spinks Brown Durand Realtors even during his 90th year. He was a Life Member of the Troup County Board of Realtors and recently assisted the Board of Realtors with the creation of a Board History.
Survivors include his spouse of 62 years, Charlene Muse Spinks; two children, J. Roy Spinks, III and his wife Tracy Y. Spinks and Gail Spinks Woodward and her husband David W. Woodward; four grandchildren, Kelly Woodward Sprinkle and her husband David Sprinkle, Jennifer L. Spinks, Katy W. Haralson and her husband Lonnie Haralson; and John Patrick Spinks and his fiancé Erin Thompson; three great grandchildren, Natalie Muse Sprinkle, Molly Rish Haralson, and John Harman Sprinkle.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, August 12, 2011 at First Baptist Church on the Square with Dr. Paul Baxter and Dr. James Willard Bartley officiating. A family burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery prior to the service.
The family will receive friends in the Welcome Center of First Baptist Church immediately following the funeral service on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church on the Square or Hospice LaGrange in memory of Mr. Calvin Thomas Spinks.
