Wayne Leslie Phelps, 75, of Santee, passed away on August 9, 2018, at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 27, 2018, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Santee. Internment will be at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego.
He was born in Tipton, Iowa, on March 19, 1943, the son of Leslie Domer and Ethel Imogene (Sisler) Phelps. Following graduation from Tipton High School in 1961 he worked as a Surveyor with the Iowa State Highway Commission. Wayne enlisted in the Navy in February 1962 and served as a Radio Operator on submarines, including the USS Growler (SSG-577) and USS Volador (SS-490), until June 1966. He married Naomi Marie Flores on April 27, 1968, in San Diego.
Wayne worked for over 40 years as a Computer Operator at General Dynamics, Computer Science Corporation, and San Diego Data Processing Corporation. He also worked for 40 years as a Statistician for the San Diego Chargers, working three Super Bowls (XXII, XXXII, and XXXVII) and the “American Bowl” held in Sydney, Australia, in 1999.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Naomi; his two sons, Lance Matthew Phelps (Jennifer) of Lakeside, and Michael Travis Phelps (Roxanne) of La Mesa; and five grandchildren, Benjamin, Madeline, Alexander, Maximilian, and Samantha; his brother, Lynn Phelps (Neva) of Tipton, Iowa; and his two sisters, Rebecca Laird (Willard) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kathy Phelps Kessenich (Jack) of Shellsburg, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Imogene Phelps.
