Barbara Celicia Payson passed away in her sleep on January 4, 2023 in La Mesa, California at the age of 93. She was born August 27, 1929 in the neighborhood of Frogtown, Los Angeles, California, to native Californian Lydia Toribia Rowland, and Wesley James Talbert. She was the only surviving child of her parents and one of many beloved cousins.
Barbara married the love of her life, Joseph Harris Payson, on July 18, 1954, they were married almost 68 years. She was the proud mother of Richard Harris Payson, and wife Sheila, daughter Victoria Marie Payson, and later on grandmother to Raine Mariah Hartman and Arianna Rafaele Payson. She was also much beloved by dear family friend Hal Lenox and sons, who shared many celebrations with her.
Barbara was a professional administrative assistant for insurance companies then later served 25 years supporting Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District where all helped her celebrate her retirement. She was active in several organizations and clubs including to the San Diego Art Musuem, the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Los Donas Women’s Club, La Mesa Women’s Club, the Tuesday Girls, the Devilettes, Los Californianos, and chairwoman for Mercy Hospital, and the Sharp Grossmont Hospital Volunteers a.k.a. Blue Angels. Barbara was a Blue Angel for nearly three decades, helping give comfort, compassion and care to patients.
A fashion expert, avid reader and meticulous home maker, Barbara was also a lover of the film and the arts. She visited many countries to see inspiring fine art in person. One of her exceptional qualities was a preservation of lifelong friendships, from her Los Angelese connections, school mates, coworkers and fellow volunteers. She held great value in maintaining all relationships and when not reading her next favorite mystery novel, she was checking on her friend's health and wellness.
Barbara will be missed by all who knew her. She lived to explore and spread charity. Rest in peace.
