For Gilberto, no one was a stranger. He had a knack of making friends wherever he went. He loved to talk and tell his stories. Coffee with his cronies was a morning and afternoon ritual for many years.
Gilberto was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista for many years. He was a member of Optimist Club and active in the Harlingen High School Quarterback club when he was younger. Gilberto had a passion for music and playing in a trio with his older brother Carlos. He was also part of the group that provided music to the Queen of Peace Church for many years. He was also a member of the Rosicrucian Order, AMORC for the majority of his life.
Gilberto was an avid hunter. Weekends at the hunting lease were a ritual from Thursday to Sunday in the Aguilar household. It was time well spent with his beloved wife Amelia, son Gilbert Jr. and hunting companions Juan Gonzalez, "Grandpa" Trevino and Albert Trevino. He enjoyed watching football.
Gilberto was always a hard worker and enjoyed route sales. He also had an opportunity to manage Whataburgers in the Beaumont area until he founded his company in 1972. His company was active for 52 years before his recent retirement.
Gilberto is survived by his children Dora Mae Simpson; Gilbert Aguilar Jr.; Norma Aguilar-Sosa; his sisters San Juanita Aguilar and Adelle Licon; his grandchildren Heather K Atchley, Brando Joshua Munoz, Amanda A Smith, Mia M Aguilar, Amalio Anthony Munoz IV, his great-grandchildren Natalie Munoz, Bradley Smith, Allyson Munoz, Lila Sherry Atchley, Randi Kelly Atchley and Maelee Dawn Atchley.
Gilberto was preceded in death by his wife Amelia Aguilar; his father Nicolas Aguilar and his mother Irene Aguilar; his brothers Carlos Aguilar; Nicolas Aguilar Jr.; Alfonso Aguilar and his sister Lucille Aguilar Butler.
A memorial service for Gilberto will be held Friday, November 24, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Heavenly Grace Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 26873 N. White Ranch Road, La Feria, Texas 78559. Following the memorial service will be a placement at 2:00 p.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park, 14166 US-83 BUS, La Feria, Texas 78559.
