James Odas Corbit, 78, Newport, Tennessee, formerly of Kokomo, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Newport, Tennessee. He was born Sept. 10, 1937, in Cave City, Arkansas, to George F. and Nannie (Marlin) Corbit. On Feb. 13, 1995, he married Janet Joiner. She preceded him in death on Sept. 22, 2014.
A 1955 graduate of Kokomo High School, James served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960, stationed in Amarillo, Texas. He retired in 1999 from General Motors after working 38 years. A former youth basketball player, James enjoyed sports of all kinds, but he particularly loved supporting his beloved Indiana Hoosiers and Indianapolis Colts.
He is survived by two daughters, Sabrina Puckett (Bruce Shubert), Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Dana (Randy) Nussio, Novi, Michigan; stepson, Dennis (Melanie) Joiner II, Frankfort; stepdaughter, Tiffany (Cecil) Bradford, Frankfort; two grandsons, Joel (Nichole) Nevins, Santa Rita, Guam, and James Matthew Puckett (Christina Campbell), Lafayette; four granddaughters, Marissa Nussio, Columbus, Ohio, Alyssa Puckett, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Caterina and Alexa Nussio, both of Novi, Michigan; three stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earnest Neill Corbit and Emmitt Clifton Corbit; and a sister, Edith Thelma Powell.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2016, at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, with Pastor Kerry Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
