Obituary of Evan Ray Heim
Evan Ray Heim passed away on Friday, October 25th at his home in Kokomo. Evan was born June 13, 1995 in Indianapolis, IN. He was the only son of Gina Heady Heim and the late Fred (Ralph) Heim. Evan graduated from Kokomo High in 2014, where he played football and wrestled. Evan took a mechanic class as an elective and fell in love with mechanics, this developed into his love of diesel trucks. If you knew Evan, you knew he was a ‘truck guy’! Evan also had a love for this country. He joined the Army Reserves in his junior year of high school. Evan attended Boot Camp at Fort Benning, Georgia between his Junior and Senior years of high school. He came back a stronger, committed young man. When Evan was your friend you knew he always had your back. Three days after graduating high school Evan headed to AIT military training. He then reported to Army Reserve Unit in Lafayette Indiana for his 6 + 2 contract. Three weeks after graduating from AIT, he started college at the University of Northwestern-Ohio and graduated with a dual degree in Diesel Technician/Agricultural Equipment Technician. Evan fit into the gear head, truck life. While at UNOH Evan spent his weekends traveling and working for Trinity Karting Group. He loved working on any kind of motor. Evan would work on friend’s trucks and cars in his driveway. He believed in the ‘Real Men Drive Trucks’ moto. He believed Cummins was the only motor worth having. If you had a mechanical problem, Evan was your guy. There is still a pile of old parts/stereo systems in the barn out back. His friends and family knew he was always just a phone call away. He would drive a state away to pick up a friend’s broken down truck. October 24, 2018 Evan started the fight of his life against a rare, very aggressive cancer called Adrenocortical Carcinoma. After 10 months of high powered chemo, followed by 10 rounds of maximum radiation and a brief trial of yet another type of chemo; at one year and one day Evan’s body gave out on him. He believed to the end he was going beat this cancer. He had a 4-year tradition of watching Thursday Night Football with family and friends. True to the end, his last night on earth was spent watching Thursday night football surrounded by family and, yes, there was always pizza. Even though it was not his Chicago Bears, and a pretty bad game, it was a tradition, and traditions must go on. Evan was a kind soul, an outstanding son, a cherished grandson, a loved nephew, a cousin who was always there and, to many, a friend you could always count on. Evan was a rare kind of guy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. There will be a public visitation for Evan held at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home on Friday, November 1st from 4-7 pm. Another visitation will be held on Saturday, November 2nd from 10-11 am, followed immediately by a funeral service. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Evan's name to: Rogel Cancer Center Adrenal Cancer Program - 310488 C/O The University of Michigan Office of University Development Envelopes will be available at Sunset Memory Garden.
