Dr. Stephen Fleming Hutchins, age 74, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. The fourth of five children, Steve was born in Kingsport, TN on June 18, 1949 to Dr. W. Broughton and Christine Taylor Hutchins. Steve was a 1967 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School then attended the University of Tennessee majoring in Biology. He was in the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Following graduation, he entered medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN receiving his MD degree in December 1974. Steve met his wife Robin during this time. They were married on June 22, 1974, nearly fifty years ago. Medical school was followed by an internship, a residency in anesthesiology, and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia. Steve and Robin came to Knoxville in January 1979 and joined Knoxville Anesthesia Group, P.C. (KAG) at that time. He remained with KAG at St. Mary's Hospital until his retirement at age 64 1/2.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Dr. William B. Hutchins, Jr., and brother-in-law Robert E. Plott, Jr. He is survived by his wife Robin Plott Hutchins, daughter Margaret Erin Renkel (Dave), daughter Megan Elizabeth Queener (Josh), son Andrew Brison Hutchins (Caitlin), grandsons Hunter, Max, Jack, Sam and Silas. Surviving siblings are George R. Hutchins (Pam), Josie Hutchins Powers (Jon), and Kitty Hutchins Howe (Fred). Steve loved to play golf, listen to music, read about history and politics, and dote on his grandchildren. After much discernment, Steve found great joy and happiness in the Catholic Church. He became a member of The Knights of Columbus, even though his health prevented active involvement.
Traveling became a special treat for Steve in his sixties. Among many other trips, he treated his beloved mother-in-law Jane to a wonderful 80th birthday cruise to the Mediterranean. He and Robin especially enjoyed traveling with close friends Dr. Michael and Suzanne Elliott.
Many thanks to Senior Helpers of Knoxville, Gentiva Hospice, and most especially the caring staff at The Nursing Center at Little Creek. We would like to especially thank Dr. Shawke Soueidan of Riverside Neurology and Sleep Specialists in Williamsburg, VA.
