Sharon was born November 4, 1940 to Fred O. and Helen Jones Branum, who both preceded her in death. She was baptized at age 8 in the Baptist Church. First born of four, her three brothers, James Branum, William F. Branum, Sr., and Robert R. Branum, Sr., also preceded her in death. She was widowed in 2005 from her husband of 41 years, George Wesley Bishop.
Sharon graduated from Fulton High School in 1958 and attended the University of Tennessee, graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She was employed by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services for 35 years and while working there received her Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee in 1979. After retirement, she went to work for Knoxville's Community Development Corporation for five years supervising social work staff for housing developments.
