John "J.R." McCarter, age 90, of Louisville, Tennessee passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2022. J.R. was a Korean War Veteran, serving his country in the United States Navy. He was a family man who adored his girls and was also an avid fisherman who loved spending time on the lake. J.R. was a VFL and loved Tennessee football and cheering for the Atlanta Braves.
J.R. is preceded in death by his parents, John and Vola McCarter; siblings, Emma Ogle and J.C., Carolyn Jackson, Steve McCarter; nephew, Dennis Ogle; in-laws, Oscar and Inez Watson; sister-in-law, Margaret Rose; brother-in-law, Max Watson; aunt and uncle, Blanche and Robert Brashear; and special friends, Jack Demarcus and Tom Cate.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dortha McCarter; daughter, Karen Whitson (Sam); granddaughter, Marissa Valentine (Bundy); great-granddaughters, Abigail Brakebill (Dakota) and Olivia Valentine; great-great-grandson, Kace Brakebill; special nephew, Todd Rose (Tracy) and family, Maegan Leon (Corey) and children, Brystol and Braylann, Brandon Rose, Katie Bowman (Anthony Singleton), Marah Bowman; siblings, Larry McCarter (Frankie), Jerry McCarter (Janet) and sister-in-laws, Joyce McCarter and Jeri Watson; many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins; and very special friend, Marilyn Cate.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Berry Highland Memorial, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919. Family and friends will gather for a graveside service at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, October 18 in Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery.
