Mr. Young was born in Lawsonville, NC on April 30, 1934 to the late Arthur and Ruth Young.
He graduated from Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville, NC before serving in the United States Air Force.
It was during basic training in Amarillo, TX to learn aircraft mechanics that he met Joan James, his future wife.
Mr. Young was stationed in Verdun, France and Bitburg, Germany. After a decorated enlistment, he married Miss James, returned to North Carolina, and became a state trooper.
The love he developed as a child for aviation led him to earn his pilot’s license. Mr. Young continued his pilot training program earning his wings by crop dusting as a second job.
Upon logging enough hours necessary for a commercial pilot’s license, he was hired by Piedmont Airlines in 1965.
He flew out of the Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta. At retirement in 1990, he was flying a Boeing 767 to Europe.
Mr. Young was a member of the Morrow Masonic Lodge #734, a Shriner, an honorary Deputy Sheriff of Henry County, a past city council member of Morrow, GA, Police Commissioner of Morrow, GA, and he also served Morrow as a volunteer fireman. He was a member of the Piedmont Silver Eagles retired pilot group and a Piedmonster. Mr. Young enjoyed outdoor sports, teaching hunter safety, and had an interest in local law enforcement, which he supported.
Mr. Young is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan Young, his darling daughter Lisa Young Laughlin of Fredericksburg, Virginia and son-in-law Joseph Stambaugh and former son-in-law Ron Laughlin, and three grandchildren that always put a sparkle in Poppy’s eyes.
They are Heather Glossup of Knoxville, TN, Ashley Laughlin of Bangkok, Thailand, and his namesake, Thomas Laughlin of Bristol, TN. Mr. Young had one great-grandchild, Mason Glossup, of Knoxville, TN. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Singleton of Wilmington NC. His sister and brothers-in-law include Peggy Young, Sharon James Welch, Tom and Deborah James, and Jesse and Gayla James.
Those that preceding him in passing are Bonnie James Montgomery, Cleo Montgomery, Walter P. James, LaMoine James, Frank James, Joe James, and Mikey James. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at Johnson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, NC on Monday, December 2nd at 12 p.m. Funeral services will follow. Graveside services will be held at the Onslow Memorial Park in Jacksonville, NC at 2 p.m. Mr. Young will be laid to rest by his parents and infant son, Walter Arthur.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Piedmont Silver Eagles Captain’s Fund, a scholarship program that allows youth the chance to fulfill the dream of flight that Mr. Young once had.
The family wishes to say a special thank you to his caregivers who became friends and to friends and relatives who visited and sent cards during his long illness.
Henry Thomas Young has flown west. He will be missed by those who loved him.
