He is preceded in death by his parents, Morris Julian and Ethel Kelly Julian; sister, Joyce Julian Whaley and brother, Lynn Julian. He is survived by his wife, Ada Bowman Julian; daughters, Karen Julian Roberts (David) and Katrina Julian Ellis (David); grandchildren, Holly Roberts Pooser, Natalie Ellis Griffith, Lindsey Roberts McDonald and Daulton Ellis; great grandchildren, Abilene, Amelia, Liam, Emerson, Sirena and Reagan.
Harold attended Young High School and while he was a student he worked at the Knoxville Journal. He graduated from Young High School and entered the U.S. Navy in World War II. After his discharge he completed a BA degree in journalism at the University of Tennessee. He began his career at the Tennessean in Nashville and Shelbyville Times Gazette. He was an editor for a weekly paper at the Robertson County Times and Cookeville Herald Citizen. When he returned to Knoxville, he worked as a copy editor at the Knoxville News Sentinel for almost 30 years. He was also a columnist until he retired in 1989 and continued to write his column from home. After his retirement, he and his wife traveled to all 50 states and several foreign countries. They also enjoyed several cruises.
He was a lifetime member of the Elk Lodge and served at the O’Connor Senior Center for information and referral. He was treasurer and held other offices at the Knoxville Newspaper Guild. He was active as a precinct chairman for the New Hopewell community for several years. He and his wife were members of the First Baptist Church of Knoxville where he was a member of the Sunday School class led by Andy Edmondson and Bob Hall.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Wednesday, May, 10, 2023 in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville TN 37920 with a funeral service to follow at 3:00 PM. Rev. Joe Chandler will be officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Harold's Sunday School class. Pallbearers will be Robert Owens, Mike Kelly, Roland Julian, Jack Edmondson, Mark Gibbs and Joe Chandler.
