Hale, Gene Sharp, age 90, of Powell, passed away on December 30, 2018. Gene was a member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church where he was active in the student ministry and was a faithful member of Gideons International. He was a tutor with Knox County Literacy Program and South Knoxville Elementary School.
He was a graduate of Jefferson City High School and earned his bachelors degree with the University of Tennessee. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Gene retired with Nationwide Insurance with 25 years of service. Gene was a supporter of the University of Tennessee Athletics for over 50 years and enjoyed attending football and basketball games. Preceded in death by parents, Ernest E. Hale and Nema S. Hale and wife, Flossie L. Hale. He is survived by wife, Catherine Smith Hale; sons; John L. Hale of Coppell, Texas and Robert W. Hale and wife, Ellen, of Knoxville; grandchildren, Hannah Hale of Plano, Texas, Rachel Stvan of Reston, Virginia and Josiah Hale of Lynchburg, Virginia, stepson, Barry F. Smith and wife Angela; grandson, Chase Smith of Irmo, South Carolina. John Clapp who was his dear friend since childhood. Many thanks to caregiver Brenda Brown, the staff of the CVICU at UT Medical Center and Roseanne Barker at the sleep clinic for their loving care. The family will receive friends from 6-7 PM at Sevier Heights Baptist Church with A Celebration of Life Service to be held at 7:00 PM, Thursday, January 3, 2019. Rev. Hollie Miller officiating.
