Elizabeth “Libby” Claiborne Noland passed away on Friday October 20 at her home in Seymour, Tennessee after an extended illness. Her husband and son were with her. She was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on January 5, 1939 to William H and Lucille Humphrey Claiborne. She was raised in Seymour and attended Seymour elementary school. Elizabeth commuted to Knoxville Catholic High School. Upon graduation, she entered the convent and became a Sister of Mercy, earning a bachelor’s degree from Xavier University and masters from Marquette University. She remained there for 14 years and taught at schools in Memphis, Lawrenceburg, and Nashville. After leaving the convent she taught at Department of Defense schools in Germany and Okinawa, taking the opportunity to travel in Europe and the Far East. When she returned home, she earned a masters degree in library science from the University of Tennessee. While teaching in Seymour, she met her future husband Garry. They married July 10, 1977 and settled in Seymour. She taught at Seymour High School from 1970 to 1988 and from New Center from 1989 to 2000. She retired but continued to teach home-bound children. She is preceded in death by her parents. Libby is survived by her husband, Garry Noland, and son Andrew; sisters, Helen Claiborne Seawell and husband Bill, Ruth Frese and husband Jim nieces Mary Seawell Fuselier, Hallie Henderson Lynch, Susan Seawell Eppright, and Michael Seawell; 12 great-nieces, and great-nephews; and a host of extended family and friends. Family will receive friends Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 5-7pm, with a 7pm Rosary. Funeral Mass will be Friday, October 27, 2017, 10am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
