Nana meant the world to me.  I helped take cars of her in her last days.  She always put a smile on my face.  She was constantly talking about her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.  She was a mother above all.  She will be missed.  I know she is at home now with the Lord.  God bless you Nana....You are greatly loved...

Grandmother Carrie Mae Middlebrook affectionately known as Nana will always be remembered. Nana's beautiful singing voice was something great to behold it created a sense of peace. Like many grandmothers Nana offered lots of love and she passed along a few words of wisdom whenever she had the opportunity to visit with her grandchildren. Nana was a special grandmother and she will always be remembered and now here are a few words from my brother Justin Coleman. I know that Nana is looking down at us from Heaven smiling because she is in a happy beautiful paradise. I will always miss Nana, but I am glad that she is at peace now.

Praise God, Mom is with Jesus now and forever more!  Our Mom was a beautiful lady that not only spoke about the Lord all the time but also led many to faith by her example.  I appreciate the opportunity to help Mom with her daily needs for the last 12 years. Some may think I was her favorite, but Mom loved all of her children the same.  Every parent knows their children individually and Mom chose me to advocate for her. While I felt persecuted some of the time because of her decision, I know that I did the right thing by our mother and that my actions were pleasing to God.  Mom and Dad taught us to love everyone.  From my upbringing I know it is not what people do to you but rather it is all about how you respond to it.  Mom and Dad were in agreement that if “something does not work out one way don’t give up, but go around another way and you will arrive”. Mom and Dad are together again and I am looking forward to one day joining them in Heaven for eternity. We know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Mom is with us in our hearts and lives through us. 
It is up to each one of us now to meet Jesus for ourselves and rest assured that we will rejoice that one sweet day in the by and by!

Dear Nana. I will miss your laugh, smile, voice and just being in your presence. Being the first of 21 grandchildren was a task but Nana taught me to handle it with grace and ❤. Being the first allowed me to  soak up all the love, peace and patience Nana poured into me. I can't find the words to express the bond we had. She was loved dearly by all. She had 28 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren that will miss her as well.

To My Sweet Nana, 

Nana, You and I had so many sweet memories that we shared that will always warm my heart when I think about them. I will never for how you taught me various life lessons and the importance of being on time. One of my memories with you was when I used to go to work with you down Mrs. Cooley as a housekeeper. You made sure that we was always on time because we had to catch public transportation just to get to work. When we arrived at Mrs. Cooley to clean her house, I will never forget all the work we had to do along with various task once we completed the work around the house. I will never forget after working there for 8 hrs. We only made $45.00. For all that work we had done. Nana ensured me that it’s not about how much you make but making sure you never take a short cut in getting the work done because you never knew when  that $45.00 had to make ends meet. Nana showed me how to step outside my own comfort and gave me real values and principles throughout life. I will never forget also all the times we spent in the kitchen cooking Fried Chicken, Popping Beans and all at the same time, eating while the food was cooking. Yes ‘ me and my Nana had lots of laughter in the kitchen. I will never forget what I once heard about losing a Grandmother, “Our Grandmother hold our tiny hands for just a little while…..but will be in our hearts ever”. 

I know to be absent in the body, is to be present with our god and Nana, even though you are no longer here on earth , you have created generations in our family to your Kids, Your Grandkids and now your Great Grandkids. We all were so bless to have you in our life’s, so now I will lead by example to my Child and my future children and I know you raised my mother to carry on the torch.  You will forever be apart of my soul and I must say that you held my hand and now you will forever be in my heart.

My mother,

Nana was the most wonderful and God fearing mother I have ever known. I thank God for a saved mother that raised her children to fear God and to love everyone. I learnt as a child to forgive and if you don’t you could go to hell and not to hold anything in my heart against anyone. I was taught about faith and how we must believe God word. We were taught about sin, no sin will enter the kingdom. My mother would say "God is the door and if you get in you had to go through God." I was taught all of this as a child and more.

 My mother would say when I get to the door of Jesus I don’t want any trouble. My mother had a made up mind that Heaven was her home. All of her children will be without an excuse because they know right from wrong. I am like my mother. I don’t want any trouble when I get to the door of Heaven. Now a few words from my Husband Gary…. 
When I became part of Nana’s family, She loved me as one of her own. I truly believe that when Nana’s car was on the road it became invisible to police. Any where Nana went with a car load of children. Nana had a wonderful sense of humor.   Every time Frankie and I visited Nana, I would start Nana singing her favorite church song. The song was "How I Got Over." I loved Nana as my own mother. I never left Nana’s side without laying hands and praying for Nana. Nana is not looking back and wondering how she got over!! Nana’s love for Jesus got her over!!! Love Gary and Frankie

My nana taught me so many valuable life lessons throughout my lifetime by leading by example. Every single day Nana would express her faith and trust in the Lord whether it be by joyfully rejoicing out loud thanking Jesus, reading the Bible, or by singing along with some of her favorite gospel hymns. As a young boy I didn't quite fully understand her motivation for doing this so routinely but as I grew into a young man I then began to grasp just how critically important it is to maintain and nourish your individual relationship with Christ our Savior. I am truly grateful for each and every value instilled in me by Nana but without question I am most thankful that she not only told me but also show me on a daily basis how a genuine child of God should carry themselves. Regardless of my shortcomings or obstacles in life I will always keep that in the forefront of my mind because like my nana used to say, "I [too] want to meet Jesus for myself." I love and miss Nana very much but I know she is side by side with Jesus watching over and protecting me. 

I will always honor and celebrate my Mother's faith filled life and the example she set. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 KJV: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 

My Mother gracefully fought a good fight, she stayed the course and kept her faith and is now wearing her crown of righteousness. 

She has transitioned into the Holy presence of God where there are treasures of unspeakable joy, peace, perfect love, eternal life, and victory in Christ Jesus. My Mother left a legacy of love, strength, grace and faith. She left a mark on our lives that cannot be erased.

Her memory and legacy of love will remain and live on through each of us that was blessed to know her. I love you Mom, you are missed but will never be forgotten. 



My grandmother raised me and all my siblings.  She taught me the importance of school and to keep moving no matter what happens. I remember all the cousins on pallets at nana's house. The endless pot of chicken and rice that she made with not much food for all the kids.  She could throw a shoe with accuracy at the same time oil your hair and plat it down, leaving your face greasy.  I remember being at the dollar store and her saying " Get a pack of combs for Angie."  Or being at Mr.Gatties with 20+ kids, to which i'm sure we ran out of business. She was the best one. She told us " Don't be no fool or let nobody make you into no fool", with so much seriousness. She taught me how to make   sweet potato pie among other things.  I remember once she said " umph.. your grass is growing", referring to my hair. Then she said " Is all that yours?" while feeling around my head making sure it wasn't a wig. Lol. Nana was too funny, she gonna let nobody tick her.  I remember asking so many questions to the point she would just start singing " Jesus on the main line tell em' what you want", all while clapping and smiling.  She was truly the sweetest person but she would get with you if you were acting like a "monkey".  She always tried to do what was best and only wanted her children to get along and the grand kids to go to school and get a good education. She could not make it to my graduations but I do remember her eyes when I told her I was accepted to law school. She said " Thats good, yo folks gonna need a lawyer,hee hee" We both fell out laughing. I loved her as my mother, not my grandmother and I am sure my siblings felt the same. Her body is gone but she will never be forgotten. I just had a conversation with her about my baby and it ended with me laughing not crying. For the people who's  lives she touched she is alive and vibrant as ever. If you don't believe me, try and talk to her and see what happens. I love you Nana, for ever and always! Honor her by being your best

My Nana is the definition of a spiritual warrior. She always knew there was nothing that could over power God. This single message is one of many she instilled in me as her grandson. However, this message will stay with me forever and passed down to my kids. Thanks Nana for everything! Your the Best Person anyone could have to look up to! 

I only had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Carrie Middlebrook once when I went to her house with my husband who was doing work at her place for Chris.  However, I have been close friends with Chris for many years and after many conversations with him about his mom, I feel that I have known her for a long time also.  I deeply admire the way she raised him to be a thoughtful, caring person who is a true believer in God and Christ Jesus.  He Is one of the few believers who sanctions living the word and doing the word.  I consider that behavior to be a product of his upbringing.  Chris loves and respects the elderly and was deeply dedicated to his mother.  Chris, I admire the commitment that you demonstrated to taking care of your mother.  I know that your mother is extremely proud of you and can rejoice with the Lord when she hears the words “well done thy good and faithful servant…enter into the joy of the Lord”! 

I never got the chance of meeting her. However, I got to meet her son, who he spoke so highly of her. Her family is in my thoughts and prayers for losing such a loved one.

Dear Nana,


You were my best friend. I felt as if I could come to you and talk to you about anything. It was sad the day that we lost you. I feel like a light from our family is gone. You always knew how to bring about peace and joy to everyone you were around. Although you had many grandkids, we all felt you love the same. I feel like a voice we loved is stilled. I miss just hearing you. 

Someone once told me that losing a grandparent is one of the deepest sorrows. Life is so precious. I mourn the sweet memories that we shared together. I think about how we used to go to church every Sunday in the old green ford. I was so happy to go and rejoice in the Lord with you on Sundays. I enjoyed singing songs with you and you telling me about how Christ is coming soon. I think about how I received the holy ghost and was saved at your church. It was you and Sister Smith who introduced me to Christ. And yes I can say, I never looked back. 

In grieving I realize that everything changes. Nothing can be held onto forever. We are only living on borrowed times. We are all here for a purpose and a reason. We were never promised to live forever. It is what we do with the time that counts. As my grandfather would say ‘Study HARD girl”. He always would stress to go to school and be all you can be. That was part of my motivation that encouraged me to get my Master’s Degree. 

So as I am ending this letter with my eyes full of tears, I am rejoicing over the memories that we shared. My knowing that you are in a better place is what puts a smile on my face. I know that you did your best with the borrowed time that you had here on Earth. I can rest assured that you’re in a better place. I know now you are singing so full of life. I will keep the faith and rest in hope that I will see you again one day.

I am very grateful to say that Mrs Carrie and I was friends.. I referred to her as nana I was grateful that I could be there in some of her last hours I prayed with her and she blinked her eyes to say amen she was the sweetest thing and sang Jesus Jesus Jesus over and over again and I smiled each time she called him to the room Jesus she knew who her present help was ... I'll never forget her and her sweet disposition and knowing that she love the Lord as much as she did gave me comfort in knowing when she passed she has now gone to heaven to be at the right hand of God To be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD what a blessing she was .....she leaves a testimony that's for sure she will be missed but never forgotten thank you Mrs Carrie /nana  i'll see you in heaven❤️🙏🏼 Gwen ..Chattanooga Tennessee

I just want to send my most sincere condolences to Chris and to the whole family!  Nana was like a mother to me.  Here is something you probably did-not know.  Nana passed away on the same day my mother passed away back on December 16th, 1966 ( I was nine years old).  Anyway your mom knew my mother and she told me my mother was her insurance lady.  She called her Lois (for Deloris).  We hit it off right away after she shared some things about my mother that I will always cherish.  Nana always had a listening ear and a prayer on her heart to help me through whatever I was dealing with at the time.  She always told me the truth and I so admired how much she loved the Word of God and quoting scriptures came second nature to her.  When we were together she would love to sing hymns or she would ask me to sing to her.  Oh how lovely and precious Nana was to me.  I will forever be grateful for the times she poured into my life and what I experienced in seeing her life up close to live out what it means to love God above all, to love family, and to love others.  She was so full of love that she had plenty to go around.  Because I had met Nana latter in her life I had no idea that Nana use to make sweet potato pies.  I just remembered how much she loved to eat them.   Nana is a lovely soul and I will always cherish her in my heart.  Thank you for sharing her with me.  I could talk to Nana about anything and she would pray for me and with me to give me sound scripture doctrine to  stand on.  I just loved that about her.  Nana had a sweet and gentle spirit about her, so confident in the Lord, yet humble in spirit.  I will miss her laughter and smile.  She was and is a mighty woman of God.  Nana I know you will have many crowns to lay at the feet of Jesus!  Love you!  Until we see each other again Sweet Nana, Many thanks and Blessings, Natalie Coleman 

Ms. Carrie will be missed. She was such a sweet lady. She always had a smile and a kind word. I think of her everytime I go driving and I am blessed to have known her.

I have so many fond memories of my uncle Frank and Aunt Carrie while growing up in Knoxville.  We had many, many good times together.  Carrie was a lovely lady with a sweet personality.  She triumphed in good and bad times but always came out with a positive attitude.  I'm sure she will be sorely missed by her family and friends.  I will miss the spirit of her even though I have not lived in Knoxville in over 45+ years.  But I would always see her at our Family Reunions and always enjoyed reminiscing about the old times.
Let us remember all the good times, for there were many.  All of us have to take that final journey alone but will meet with family and friends eventually.  Rest well dear Carrie until we meet again.
