Bill attended Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for the last 16 years. He served in the Navy for 4 years and the TN Air National Guard for 20 years. He worked in the Office of Tributary Area Development at TVA and retired after 28 years of service. After retirement from TVA , Bill started Townsend Trucking, a freight transportation business. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky Masons. He enjoyed restoring classic automobiles, gardening and traveling. Bill was very compassionate and supported many local and national charities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora and Hettie Marshall Townsend; first wife, Linda Douglas Townsend; brother, G.R. Townsend and sisters: Kathleen Latham, Stella Grace Townsend and step-son, Andy Winkle.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Ogle (Winkle) Townsend; son, Randy (Julia) Townsend and their children: Aaron and Matthew; son, Wayne Townsend and his children: Nicholas (Krista) Townsend, Matthew (Jennifer) Townsend; great-grandchildren: Jeremiah, Eva, Landyn and Cadance.
He is also survived by his step-family: David (Belinda) Winkle, Teresa (Russ) Manning, Bob (Texie) Winkle, Mike Winkle, Brenda Winkle; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to UT Hospice, especially his nurse Chandra Garland and Chaplain Greg Bennett for the wonderful care they provided.
The family will receive friends Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 6632 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville, TN with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 11:00 am officiated by Reverend Dr. Judy Bullock, Pastor and Reverend Father Dr. David Winkle. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or your favorite charity.
