Hard to believe that two years -- of pandemic -- have passed since Saul died.  He is one of the many people I miss seeing "around town" but it's heartening to see that his desire and work to make cities in general and Waterloo in particular a better place live on, through his family. We were very saddened to hear of the loss of Saul.  He was always a great person to talk to and was a very gentle soul.  He always kept a smile on his face and from reading everyone else's memories he made a positive impact on many live's.

I was a "mature" student in the School of Urban and Regional Planning from 1987 to 1991.  Saul taught the Urban Design courses that I took.  He was my favourite professor because he was the only one who understood and taught us what makes a city work for the people who live and work there, although I probably didn't fully appreciate it at the time.  
I have recently retired after a rewarding and satisfying career in city planning, mostly with the City of Toronto Planning Division.  I often thought about Saul's precepts while trying to make the City of Toronto a better place for it's residents.
It was sad to hear of Saul's passing but his legacy lives on in the many students he influenced during his time at UW, including myself.  I hope you can take some comfort from that fact.

There is one Prof that I had when I was at Waterloo in the late 70's and early 80's with great affection and clarity, and that is Saul.  I learned from Saul a different way of seeing, of seeing  of seeing beauty in the world. And I also learned pacing and generosity:  as I would, on occasion, accompany his slow walk down the hallway to his office, seeking his guidance and advice, I will never forget his kindness and patience in responding.  And he had a wonderful sense of humour that left an inedible impression on me.  I was delighted to run into him at the AGO a few years ago and discover that my memory had not been inaccurate: he was every bit as amusing and warm 35 years later.

We are deeply saddened to hear that Saul is no longer with us. Our hearts are with you in this time of sorrow, and may our prayers serve as comfort to you. 

We were greatly honored and very lucky to know Saul. He was always such a kind and wonderful person, and knowing him is such a blessing in our lives. Saul always made new immigrants like us feel at home in Canada. He kindly invited us to celebrate many holidays together, including Canadian holidays, Jewish holidays, and Chinese holidays. Saul is extremely intelligent, knowledgeable and nice, and he was a great mentor for Rong. Saul was also very kind to Alice, Anna, and Yaoxin (Liyun’s mother). We greatly cherish the nice memories of Saul in the past many years since early 2000s. We are really grateful for his natural kindness and great help. Saul will always be remembered in our entire lives.

Saul Herzog was my favourite professor when I attended the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Waterloo.   He supervised my reading courses in heritage planning (when an undergraduate degree in heritage planning was unavailable in Canada) as well as my final-year undergraduate paper.  His academic guidance and personal encouragement enabled me to pursue a 40-year career in heritage planning.

Dear Joan, Stephen & Micah. We were so sad to learn of Saul's passing. Cousin Saul was a treasured part of our extended family. Saul was never one to miss a simcha and was always present to support us during difficult times. His warmth, quiet sense of humour and tenacity will remain with us always. Sending thoughts and prayers to the Herzog family. Saul lived a wonderful and full life, and no doubt made a lasting impression on so many. 

The passing of Saul has inspired much reaching out across the Waterloo School of Urban and Regional Planning community. A significant anniversary brought  our undergrad class together last summer, with much gratitude for the school and professors that were such an important part of our foundation. Saul was one of those – a wonderful prof who brought students in and along the learning journey with kindness and caring, and a good measure of humour. So many fond memories of Saul have been shared amongst us these past days – his attention to sights on the landscape, barns and the silhouettes of hydro towers, his penchant for spelling, and my personal favorite, his letting loose with a wicked rendition of “Torn Between Two Lovers” as he observed the downside of the constant music from the Envrironmental Studies coffee shop just a few steps away from his office. Our class cohort as well as the Ottawa alumni community to which I remain connected are thinking of Saul and his extended family and community at this time. We are inspired by the positive, generous spirit so evident in the lovely photo of him – that smile and his hat of flowers. Without question we can say that our recollections of Saul bring to the fore so many fond memories – he was and remains a blessing in our lives. May his memory be a blessing to you all.

Saul was in a wheelchair when we moved to the neighbourhood, always out and about. I always loved sharing a chat with him on the sidewalk or at one of the neighbourhood parties. He was such a charming, intelligent, warm, wonderful guy. Thank you for your friendship, Saul.

I as Past Secretary of the Grand Valley Society of Architects was most pleased when Saul agreed to participate in our OAA sponsored oral history project .  Architects Talk was published in October 2015 ... WE remember Prof Saul Herzog for many years a member of the GVSA .

Saul was my prof in 1970, Urban and Regional planning. My favourite class, lots of encouragement from a professor who was like a friend. I remember I told him I  had to miss a class because I had to go home for Passover, he seemed surprised that there was a Jew in his class. Of all my profs at Waterloo I remember him as a great teacher who really enjoyed his students.


We are very sorry Joan that Saul is no longer with us. We will remember him as a vibrant person with gusto for life and  a quick smile. Our deepest condolences to you and your family. 

Saul was an amazing teacher and mentor.   An incredible person who really cared about planning and his students.   Almost 45 years after I graduated I still remember him vividly and  our many talks and projects.

Saul was one of my favourite professors while at Planning School (1975-79).  He inspired me to go beyond conventional thinking.  I always think of him when I see a barn and drive along the Niagara River Parkway.  We will miss him.

I have such great, warm memories of him during the time we were colleagues on the Grand River Accessibility Committee, and talking to him at long-ago Independent Living events. I am very sad to learn of Saul’s passing. Our family met the Herzogs when my parents were seeking an architect to design our new home in Waterloo where my father had recently joined U of W to establish the planning school.  Saul was a very hands on architect and we saw a lot of him as the plans came together. I vividly recall casing our lot with Saul as he checked measurements and inspected the land’s features. When Saul joined the planning school’s faculty and moved his family to Waterloo, we all enjoyed their company. I will always think of Saul as calm, thoughtful and talented. And smile at his dry humour. My condolences to Joan and family.

I am so very sorry to hear of Saul's passing.  The Jazz Room will be an emptier place without Saul's wonderful presence there. Saul was a wonderful person. He was a mentor to me when working on making Waterloo Region accessible for those of us with disabilities. He taught me so much and he really helped to make a difference.
