1917 - 2014
Charles was a lifelong learner. Born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, he grew up in Moncton, NB, the son of Ivan
Cleveland and Iredell Rand. He excelled at studies in high school (ProvincialHonour Roll) and at Mt. Alison University (Cum Laude '38) where
he met his beloved wife Margaret Colby (1918 - 2002). They had three children, Peter (Pat Hertzberger), Penny (Ken Cressman) and Stephen (Paula Fraser) who were loved and directed toward intellectual pursuit and a love of the arts. Postgraduate studies led to a Medical degree from McGill ('42) and a specialty in Internal Medicine ('50) after a four-year service in the RCAF and research in Seattle. His medical career at the Lockwood Clinic in Toronto ('50 - '53) and in private practice in Kitchener ('53-'61) prepared him for contributions to the federal Ministry of Health ('61-'68) and a professorship in epidemiology at the University of Western Ontario ('68-'82). Always in the pursuit of new and challenging domains. All this work was flavoured with working trips to the Arctic, Thailand, Lesotho and Sierra Leone and explorations of European culture. His gentlemanly nature endeared him to his ten grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren and all those whom he met. He will be much missed but will remain an enduring memory to many.
