He was born on October 31, 1942 first born of twins (his brother preceded him). Martin attended Adelphi School and after graduating, he went to work at the Barnett Estate for almost ten years.
In 1968, Martin left Jamaica and joined his cousin Frankie in the Bronx. Soon after, Martin’s sister Ena introduced him to her batch mate Leta. Later that year, Martin and Leta were married.
Martin worked several jobs. After being employed by Brooklyn Union Gas, he worked there for twenty-six years. He retired early due to a work related injury.
Martin was a prominent member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for over thirty years. He served as an usher and was very involved in the activities of the church. He maintained contact with several members of St. Mark’s UMC even after he relocated from Brooklyn, New York to Kissimmee, Florida in 2006.
On December 28, 2018, Martin, “Alva”, went home to be with the Lord. He was a devoted husband and a loving father, brother, and friend. He will be sadly missed by his wife Leta, his daughters: Juliet and Melanie, his grandsons: Kevin and France, his sisters: Ena, Ivy, and Joan, his brothers: Alvin, Winston, Arnold "Jeff ", and Errol, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless good friends.
A visitation for Martin will be held Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Grissom Funeral Home and Crematory, 803 Emmett Street, Kissimmee, FL 34741, followed by a funeral service from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
