Theodore "Ted" Shannon, Sr., age 88, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, in Kingsport, Tennessee. Born on February 9, 1937, in Williamson, West Virginia, Ted lived a life marked by devotion—to his family, his faith, and the many people whose lives he touched.
For over three decades, Ted worked alongside his brothers as owner/operators of a successful chain of auto parts stores in southern West Virginia. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to hard work were evident in every aspect of his career. Yet it was his deep sense of calling that led him and his beloved wife, Dolores Sue Shannon, to make a profound life change. After retiring from the business, they sold their home to became house parents at Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation where they spent another seven years offering love and guidance to at-risk children. This chapter of their lives reflected Ted’s unwavering commitment to service and compassion.
Later in life, Ted and Dolores continued their ministry by working at Holy Land USA in Bedford, Virginia, where they shared the message of God’s love with countless visitors. Teaching others about the good news of the gospel and how to receive eternal life became not just a joy but a mission. Ted’s faith was the cornerstone of his life—each morning and evening he could be found reading his Bible, drawing strength from the scriptures and prayer.
Ted is survived by his wife, his three sons, Ted Jr. (Cindy), Jim (Sharon), and Jeff, as well as two brothers, Okey (Linda) and Frank (Armanda). He is preceded in death by his parents Cecil E. Shannon, Sr. and Cleopatra M. Shannon and one brother, Cecil E. Shannon, Jr. (Beverly).
He cherished his role as grandfather to 11 grandchildren and great-grandfather to 11 great-grandchildren—his legacy stretching across generations both in the United States and East Africa.
A proud member of the Belfry High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Ted was a passionate sports fan with a special love for University of Kentucky basketball. He rarely missed a game or the opportunity to discuss all things “Wildcat” with anyone who would listen. He also enjoyed immersing himself in nature and history documentaries, always eager to learn more about the world around him.
In his final years, Ted faced many health challenges with courage and faith. Surrounded by the steadfast support of his wife and sons, he remained strong in spirit. His love for the Lord never wavered; nor did his deep affection for his family or church community.
Ted's life was one of purpose—rooted in faith, enriched by service, and filled with love. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
A visitation with his family will be Tuesday, April 22, 2025 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Sunnyside Baptist Church, 406 Cooks Valley Rd, Kingsport, TN 37664. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at the church with burial to follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.
