Robert G. “Bob” Hertel. age 81, of Kingsport, TN passed away peacefully Friday (March 12, 2010) surrounded by his loving family and friends at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Knoxville, TN on May 25, 1928, a son of the late Kenneth L. and Winifred Hayler Hertel, he has resided in this area since 1960.
Bob was a former manager of Research and Development for Mason-Dixon Lines.
He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Mr. Hertel was a Scout Master, a volunteer leader and was still active until his death with the Boy Scouts of America.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Physicians, staff and nurses in the Emergency Room and ICU at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend whose passion in life was the Boy Scouts and the outdoors.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Jane Hertel.
Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Anne E. Hertel of the home; his children, Robert G. Hertel Jr. and wife Charlotte Harris of Evanston, IL, Margaret Jane Depew and husband Stanley of Kingsport, TN and Kenneth W. Hertel and wife Ronna of Kingsport, TN; his step-children, Brenda LeAnne Newsom and husband Gail W. of Pinnacle, NC, Nadine K. Swink of Hershey, PA and Delene G. Whetsel of Kingsport, TN; one brother, James Gordon Hertel and wife Barbara Ann of Kingsport, TN; eight grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one nephew; three nieces; and numerous cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday (March 15, 2010) at Calvary Baptist Church, 1238 Pine Street, Kingsport, TN 37664
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. John Wesley Depew officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Boy Scouts of America, Local Troop #42.
