Charles William Tallman, 89, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2014, in the Holston Valley Medical Center. Mr. Tallman was born June 14, 1925 in Indian Springs, Tennessee a son of the late W.T. Tallman and Georgia Leslie Good Tallman. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II. He was Seaman First Class and participated in the Invasion of Normandy on LST 56 and received the following citations and medals, Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and the Euro-Afri-Mid-East Medal. Mr. Tallman graduated from Hiwassee College and later received a Master’s plus degree from East Tennessee State University. He worked in education in Sullivan County for over 40 years. He was a teacher and principal at Pactolus Elementary School, principal at Rock Springs Elementary School, and principal of Miller Perry Elementary School where he was famous of his notorious but fictitious “electric paddle”. Mr. Tallman was the head of the Summer Recreation program of Colonial Heights for many years. He finished his career as Director of Sullivan County Elementary Schools and served as an officer of the Sullivan County Teachers Association and President of the Sullivan County Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he taught Sunday school. He was currently a member of Logan’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ada Huff Tallman; three daughters, Teri Marsh and husband Jimmy, Karen Tallman and husband Michael Trepiccione and Doris Benton; one son, Kent Tallman and wife Sandra; seven grandchildren, Heather Barnes and husband Steve, Christy Campbell and husband Ben, Jeston Benton and wife Amy, Britni Mains and husband J.J., Shannon Booher, Angelia Pingo and husband Michael and Sara Johnson; eleven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Alley and husband Jerry; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 2, 2014 from 12:00pm until 2:00pm in the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, with the funeral service immediately following at 2:00pm with Pastor Wesley Duncan and Pastor Carl Matherly officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of the Good Shepherd of East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
