Angelina Marie Winn was a hero to the community through her work as a correctional officer, a hero to the cats she rescued and a woman who sought adventure as much as she sought the peaceful serenity of the outdoors. Angie, as her friends and family knew her, was taken from this life tragically on October 25, 2019; she was 49.
Angie, and twin brother Brian, were born into the world on January 11, 1970 to Joseph and Marlene (Grant) Winn. She graduated from St. Francis High School in 1988 and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree. She worked as a Correctional Officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections. Angie loved her job and the people she worked with were some of her closest friends. While on the job, she could be stern and serious, but that was a mask for her true personality. Some may describe her as quiet and, perhaps, a bit shy, but for those lucky enough to know her, Angie had a goofy and playful personality.
She was adventurous. There was the hiking, kayaking, camping and bird watching, but Angie took her need for exploration further by seeking abandoned buildings to photograph and explore. She also enjoyed spending time cruising on her motorcycle, reveling in the history and beauty of Northern Michigan and its Upper Peninsula. Angie was an adopted mother to many cats; even taking care of the ones she had not adopted, who would show up on her doorstep anyway. She would joke that having so many cats made her a “typical lesbian”.
In addition to nature and cats, Angie loved people too. The majority of that love was for her nieces, Rachel (Devin) McPherson, Lindsey Winn, Tiffany Fick and her great nieces Adelaide and Saylor. She was the “crazy aunt” who would spoil the girls with a “second Christmas” and all the presents they could want.
All who knew Angie are welcome to visit with her family at Covell Funeral Home in Kingsley on Saturday, November 23 beginning at 10 a.m. A service celebrating her life will be officiated by Oaks Correctional Facility Chaplain Keith Pelky and will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a social gathering and refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated in Angie’s honor to the Wexford County Animal Shelter.
