Mr. Long died Wednesday, March 20, 2013. He was born October 7, 1929 in Ripley, Tennessee.
Visitation will be Sunday evening from 6pm to 8pm at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen.
Mr. Long spent most of his childhood years in South Fulton, Tennessee. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1963 and the U.S. Army from 1963-1972. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, earning Commendation Awards and Bronze Star. He later worked for the U.S. Civil Service for 12 years. Next, he went into business in Killeen and later in Salado. He also bought a farm and raised cattle.
He enjoyed planting trees, flowers, and gardening from cuttings and seeds. He shared the bounty of these efforts with family and friends if they even looked like they would like some. He also enjoyed dancing, fishing, and hunting. He loved his children and grandchildren of whom he was very proud.
Mr. Long was preceded in death by his parents, Huey and Gertrude Long, and a sister Shirley Stainback.
Survivors include his wife, Billie A. Mabry-Long; daughter, Pamela (Robert) Johnson; son, Jason Long; grandchildren, Lauren (Andy) Yates and Wesley Johnson; sister, Peggy Holley; step son, David (Sue) Salomaa; two nephews, four nieces, 4 great nephews, and six great nieces, four step grandchildren and five step great granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Research Hospital in Mr. Long's name.
