Raymond Bishop was born April 6, 1925 in Ft. Benning, Georgia to Capt. Raymond H. Bishop and Gina Karukes Bishop. He passed away in his home at Harker Heights, TX on 25 August, 2011. Raymond married Marjorie Harrell Sept. 1, 1946 after being discharged from the Army as a medical technical sergeant and reentering the University of Texas following service in WWII in the Pacific. Graduating from UT Medical School (Galveston) in 1952 with three children, he reentered the Army as a First Lieutenant, US Army Medical Corps. With the addition of their daughter in 1953, the Bishop family began their military adventure. With duty assignments at Fort Sam Houston, Fort Benning, Fort Leavenworth, Fort Hood, Fort Sill, Fort Bliss, Carlisle Barracks, two tours in Germany, and a tour in Vietnam, Major General Bishop retired as the Commanding General US Army Health Services Command at Ft. Sam Houston in June 1983. He commanded the 5th General Hospital, Stuttgart, Germany, Reynolds Army Hospital, Ft. Sill, OK, the Commanding General of William Beaumont General Hospital, Ft. Bliss, TX, and Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, CO. One of his fondest memories of his military career was being promoted to Major General by General of the Army Omar Bradley.
In retirement, he enjoyed his Los Senderos Ranch, hunting, and fishing with his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends and an occasional martini around the campfire.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Margie, January 12, 2008 after 61 years of marriage, his parents, COL (RET) Raymond H. Bishop and Gina Bishop, and grandson, LCPL David Lindsey, USMC.
Major General Bishop will be greatly missed by his three sons, LTC (RET) Michael H. Bishop and wife Nora of Spartanburg, SC, COL (RET) Robert H. Bishop and wife Phyllis of Killeen, TX, Stephen R. Bishop of Dallas, TX, and his daughter Marilyn Bishop Rogers and husband COL (RET) Guy A. Rogers II of Frisco, TX, and by his 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Crawford-Bowers funeral home, Killeen TX from 6-8 PM on 31 August. Funeral service will be 9:30am on 1 September at Dodd Field Chapel, 3600 Dodd Blvd Fort Sam Houston followed by internment with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
