James Monroe Garvin Jr.

CW4 (Ret) James Monroe Garvin, Jr. passed away December 16, 2015. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on May 31, 1921, to James Monroe Garvin, Sr. and Mabel Roberts Garvin. He married Anna Frances Strangways in 1946 and is survived by their three children, James Monroe Garvin, III, Cedar Park, TX, Fred D. Garvin, Sr., wife Linda Garvin, Killeen, and Teresa A. Garvin, husband Frank Bullard, Killeen. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Anna. His legacy continues through these children, five grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

His 27 ½ years of service in the United States Army included tours of duty in the China-India-Burma Theater during WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Viet Nam. He drove the lead vehicle that traversed the treacherous Ledo Road. Upon retirement, he began working in the real estate field, obtained his broker’s license, and successfully operated a thriving real estate office for the next 30 years, serving as President of the Killeen/Ft. Hood Area Board of Realtors and Vice President of the Texas Area Realtors (TAR) Association.

He was an active member of the Killeen Exchange Club for 40 plus years during which time he served on numerous committees and also as Club President. He was a recipient of the Exchange Club Golden Deeds Award. He furthered his commitment to community service by serving on the Bell County Tax Appraisal Board for numerous terms. He was an active pilot for the Young Eagles, a program that offers free airplane rides to under privileged youth. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

A visitation will be held at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Tuesday, December 22, 2015. Funeral services will be held at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home chapel in Killeen at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 23, 2015. Burial will followed the Central Texas Veteran’s Cemetery.
