He was enlisted in the Air Force and went on to retire as an air traffic controller within the civil service. He served in the Killeen Fire Department as a Volunteer Fireman for 25 years. George was a Texas Freemason. He made many friends during his 57 years of residency in Killeen. George was a regular in the coffee crowd for over 50 years at all of the regular places; The Brown Derby Café, Chess's Resturant, Henderson's, and finally at The Hallmark Restaurant.
George is survived by; daughter Jackie (John) Powe; and son Gary(Teresa) Schaaf; sisters Francis Paylo, Gerry Brady, and Mary Alice Lynde; granddaughters Kimberlyn Schaaf, Janette (Christopher) Mitchell, grandsons Bruce (Alicia) Schaaf, John (Samantha) Powe, great grandchildren Bryden Schaaf and Odin Powe.
He was preceded in death by his wife Loretta Schaaf and his parents.
A graveside service for George will be held Friday, February 16, 2018 at 12:00 PM at Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery , Killeen. A burial will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers the family encourage donations in George's honor be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
